What are greetings?
Greetings (pozdrowienia) are a short written message most often sent while traveling (for example on a postcard, a picture postcard, or in a letter) to show that you remember the addressee. They usually mention where you are staying, give a brief impression of the trip, and include a friendly message to the recipient.
Structure of greetings
- Place and date — written in the upper right corner or in the lower left corner.
- Addressing the recipient — in the vocative form, ending with an exclamation mark; typically centered in the first line above the main text (in neutral-style texts it may be omitted).
- Main message — a short note: where you are writing from, how the stay is going, what you are doing/seeing, possibly a message of remembrance and a reference to meeting again.
- Signature — below the text, on the right (in formal greetings: full first and last name; in private greetings: a first name can be enough).
Formal vs. private greetings
- Formal — use formal polite forms, keep a courteous and rather official tone; sign with your full name and surname.
- Private — use more casual, personal language; the signature may be just a first name (or first names).
Useful phrases
- Szanowny Panie/Szanowna Pani! — “Dear Sir / Dear Madam!” (formal)
- Szanowni Państwo! — “Dear Sir or Madam / Dear Ladies and Gentlemen!” (formal)
- Kochana Babciu!, Drogi Tomku!, Kochani! — “Dear Grandma!”, “Dear Tomek!”, “Dear all!” (private)
- Przesyłam/Przesyłamy serdeczne pozdrowienia z… — “I’m sending / We’re sending warm greetings from…”
- Pogoda dopisuje, a okolica jest naprawdę piękna. — “The weather is great and the area is truly beautiful.”
- Myślę o Państwu/Tobie i już nie mogę się doczekać spotkania. — “I’m thinking of you (formal/informal) and I can’t wait to see you.”
- Do zobaczenia po powrocie! — “See you when I’m back!”
- PS. … — “P.S. …” (optional postscript)
