What is an announcement?

An announcement is a short, concise informational text. It is used to communicate a specific message, for example: selling or buying something, renting, looking for a job, or reporting a lost or found item. Announcements commonly appear online, in newspapers, and on notice boards.

What should an announcement include?

• Who is announcing — a private person or an institution (e.g., “Student”, “Firma X” (Company X), “Biblioteka” (Library)).
• Purpose — e.g., selling, buying, renting out, looking for, giving away, hiring, informing.
• Subject of the announcement — specifics: what it is, key features, condition, terms (e.g., price, location, date/availability).
• Contact — phone number, e-mail, or another way to reach the advertiser.

An announcement does not require the formal structure of a letter (no place and date, no salutation). The most important things are clarity and brevity.

Language and style

• Use short sentences and concrete details (model, size, date, conditions).
• You may use common announcement abbreviations (e.g., “tel.” = phone), but don’t overuse them.
• Avoid long descriptions — include only the most important information.
